Planar Care: Keeping 50mm Graphene Drivers Pristine

A planar magnetic headset is a precision instrument wearing the disguise of a lifestyle product. The Nova Pro’s 50mm graphene diaphragm is thinner than a sheet of paper and suspended in a magnetic array with tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre. Treat it well and it will out-live three pairs of ordinary cans. Here is how.

Pads are consumables — rotate and replace them. Memory-foam lambskin pads compress with use, and as they thin, the driver sits closer to your ear, shifting the bass and soundstage you paid for. Rotate which side rests down when you set the headset on a desk so the pads wear evenly, and plan to swap them every twelve to eighteen months. Fresh pads restore the original tuning more dramatically than any equalizer setting.

Respect humidity and temperature. Graphene is durable, but the adhesives and foams around it are not fond of extremes. Keep the headset off sunny windowsills and away from bathroom steam. A closed cabinet at room temperature is ideal; a car dashboard in summer is where good drivers go to warp.

Clean gently, dry always. Wipe the pads and headband with a barely damp microfibre cloth, then let them air-dry fully before storage. Never spray liquid directly onto the cups — it wicks into the driver chamber. For the grilles, a soft dry brush lifts dust without pushing it inward.

Mind the cable and the ports. The balanced 4.4mm and detachable connectors are the most abused parts of any headset. Pull from the plug, never the cable, and store it loosely coiled rather than wrapped tight around the cups, which stresses the solder joints over time.

Store it under tension-free conditions. Hang the headset on a wide stand or lay it flat in its case. Cramming it into a bag bends the headband and crushes the pads. If you travel with it, the rigid case is not optional — it is cheaper than a re-cable.

Let the DSP DAC do the heavy lifting. Resist the urge to crank a phone amp into clipping. The onboard real-time DSP already drives these planars cleanly; feeding them a clean, moderate signal protects both the drivers and your hearing.

None of this is fussy once it becomes habit. A minute of care after each session is the difference between a headset that ages and one that simply keeps sounding new.
